The PlayStation 5 Pro is Sony's answer to gamers who want the absolute best console experience. Released in November 2024, it addresses the original PS5's main weakness: the compromise between performance and visual fidelity.

The custom AMD GPU is 67% more powerful than the base PS5, with 60% more compute units and 28% faster memory. This translates directly to better graphics and smoother frame rates in virtually every game.

Ray tracing performance is doubled or even tripled in supported titles. Games like Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart can now run with full ray tracing at 60fps—something that was previously impossible on console.

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony's answer to DLSS. Using machine learning, it upscales games to higher resolutions while adding detail that wasn't in the original image. The results are impressive—4K output that often looks better than native rendering on the base PS5.

The PS5 Pro Enhanced label appears on over 100 games at launch, with more being added regularly. Enhanced games typically offer a new 'Pro' graphics mode that combines higher resolution, better ray tracing, and steady frame rates.

Storage is bumped to 2TB, a welcome improvement. Wi-Fi 7 support future-proofs connectivity, though most gamers won't notice a difference yet.

The controversial decision is the lack of a disc drive. At $699, the PS5 Pro is digital-only, with the optional disc drive adding another $79. For physical game collectors, this is a significant drawback.

For hardcore PlayStation gamers with a good 4K display, the PS5 Pro delivers a meaningfully better experience. The $699 price is steep, but it represents the best way to play PlayStation games today.
